Description

This artwork comes from the fact that hyperdrives are really cool and I felt it deserves a good artwork. There never was a Star Wars Visual Dictionary page for hyperdrives, and I feel they deserve one, so this is my attempt.

One of the things that inspired this artwork was the fact that they came out with a book called "The Millennium Falcon Owner's Workshop Manual". There is more details about how the ship works in there. But even in that book I noticed they do not mention how many times the speed of light the ship goes.

My thoughts on this: I use to think when I was younger that "she can make 0.5 past lightspeed" that Han Solo said meant 1.5 times the speed of light, but in fact she ship goes much much faster, so it means something else (for example in Star Trek, the ship Voyager goes around 1,500 times the speed of light yet is said it will take 70 years to go across the galaxy). In Star Wars to go across a galaxy takes around a days time. This would mean going around 50,000,000 times the speed of light (c). Then one day I realized that a light year a second would be 31,536,000 c, and a light year in 0.5 second is 63,072,000 c. It fit perfectly, and I even remember the term seconds being used in star wars. So it all fits, and I wanted to add this new element to my artwork as well.

Finally the speed of Star Wars ships have been cracked ;-)

I have some website programming skills so I made this page to show the calculations better: [link]

Hope you enjoy this clever yet geeky episode of mine.
